Cutters earn split with State College
21 06 2007Williamsport Crosscutter outfielder Michael Taylor hit the game-tying single in the sixth inning.
And State College Spikes reliever Jorge Charrry balked in Derrick Mitchell from third three innings later to give the Cutters a 3-2 win and a split of Thursday night’s doubleheader.
But if you were looking for a hero or a goat, at Bowman Field, depending on your loyalties, you’d probably pin it on the guy who invented the pitch count.

Crosscutters spoil party in game of inches
21 06 2007UNIVERSITY PARK — The ball seemed destined to land somewhere in the left-center field gap, the most spacious part of Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
It hit the sweet spot. It started flying on the sharp, 45-degree trajectory that looks pleasant from every spot of the spacious stadium.
But the ball State College Spikes first baseman Justin Byler hit with two outs and the bases loaded in the eighth inning during Wednesday’s home opener never landed in one of the parallel patches of two-year-old grass.
Williamsport left fielder Jermaine Williams sprinted to his left, extended his glove and caught the ball two feet from the letters on his red jersey.
The bases were never cleared and the ideal ending never materialized.

State College a long trip for Ambrose
21 06 2007UNIVERSITY PARK — Michael Ambrose’s week has included stops in the North Carolina cities of Asheville and Hickory, and an appearance on the infield at Williamsport’s Bowman Field.
The most recent stop evoked memories of the circuitous journey Ambrose took to become a professional recruit.
Ambrose, an infielder who joined the State College Spikes earlier this week, stepped on Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for the first time Wednesday and was greeted by a coach who tried to pluck him from Canada.
The same coach now works in a spacious office overlooking Medlar Field’s third-base line.

Spikes’ second act still worth it
21 06 2007UNIVERSITY PARK — Chris Phillips, as usual, spent Wednesday in a state of perpetual motion.
The State College Spikes’ director of ticket sales strode briskly up and down the concourses at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, pausing only to greet fans he wouldn’t have known this time last year but have become, in just one season plus one game, ballpark regulars.
