SPIKES OFFENSE EXPLODES IN 10-6 WIN IN BATAVIA

The State College Spikes pounded out a season-high 18 hits on their way to a 10-6 drubbing of the Batavia Muckdogs. For the second straight game, eight of the nine Spikes starters collected a hit and it was James Barksdale that lead the way, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three stolen bases. Equally as attention grabbing as the 18 hits, was the 10 free-passes surrendered by Spikes pitchers, including six walks in the ninth inning. The six walks lead to four runs for the Muckdogs, who failed to get a ball out of the infield in the frame.

CELEBRATE THE FOURTH OF JULY AT THE BALLPARK

Medlar Field at Lubrano Park will once again be the place to be on July 4th. The Spikes will take on the Crosscutters at 1:00 p.m and then re-open the ballpark at 6:00p.m as part of the Fourth Fest Celebration.

From 6:00 – 8:00 various Penn State varsity sports – including Football, Basketball, Lacrosse and Soccer – will provide sports demonstrations on the field. The park will then remain open throughout the 4th Fest Fireworks show, which will run from 9:15 – 10:00 pm.

The stadium will be open to the general public and there is no charge for admission, however those parking in the Medlar Field at Lubrano Park parking lot will be asked to pay the standard 4th Fest parking fee.

SPIKES LOOK TO TAKE RUBBER GAME TONIGHT – 7:05

TONIGHT’S STARTER: RHP Matt Foust will make the start for the Spikes tonight, looking to improve on his first outing of the year. On June 22nd. Foust allowed three runs on five hits through his 2.0 innings of work against Jamestown. During his collegiate career, Matt took on various roles in the 2007 Nebraska Cornhusker season seeing action as a starting pitcher and a relief pitcher. In that outing, he struck out a career-high five hitters over a career-long eight innings. In the Big XII Tournament, Matt pitched 3.2 innings to save a 5-3 Cornhusker win against Texas A&M. He earned his first collegiate win against IllinoisState February 18 working 5.0 innings allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts. Matt’s strong work ethic on and off the field earned him a four year membership on the Big XII’s Commissioner Honor Roll. Out of high school, Matt was selected as the Gatorade Player of the Year in Kansas in 2003.

Picture this: it’s a cool, crisp Spring day. The midday sun beats down on your face as you strut through a freshly cut field of sparkling green grass; grass that is matted so perfectly that you would swear it’s actually carpet beneath your feet. With each step, your heartbeat begins to accelerate and your palms begin to
sweat, as the noise being made by the thousands of fans that are surrounding you begins to pick up. Through the cheers and screams, you hear one voice that eclipses them all – “Now batting…”

Former Grizzlies Pitcher Joins Pirates

The Gateway Grizzlies announced today that the contract of former pitcher Chrisitan Castorri has officially been purchased by the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. Castorri has joined the Pirates’ single-A affiliate, the State College Spikes, of the New York-Penn League.

BATAVIA, N.Y. — The State College Spikes were plodding along like they have been all year for six innings Tuesday against Batavia.

They couldn’t hit breaking pitches, and they failed to drive home runners that reached base.
