BRANDON WILLIAMS AHEAD OF THE CURVE

Williams was expected to pitch in State College his afternoon when they took on Williamsport, however this morning he got the call up to Double-A due to an overtaxed Curve bullpen.

Williams was the Pirates’ 29th round selection in the 2006 MLB Draft out of the University of South Carolina – Upstate. In two games with State College this season, the Tega Cuy, SC native is 0-1 with a 1.42 ERA. Williams is expected to return to the State College squad later this week.

Spikes’ Walker catching up

4 07 2007

By Guy Cipriano – gciprian@centredaily.com

UNIVERSITY PARK — Andrew Walker might have landed in the perfect organization for a 21-year-old catcher.

Walker became one of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ top catching prospects when he started his professional career with the State College Spikes earlier this week.

The Pirates selected Walker, who played at Texas Christian University, in the fifth round of last month’s draft. The Pirates have used only two higher picks this millennium on catchers.
