Spikes Streak Snapped in Williamsport

5 07 2007

WILLIAMSPORT, PA — All good things must come to an end, and the Spikes nine-game winning streak did just that on Thursday evening as the Spikes fell to Williamsport 3-1. The ace of the Crosscutters staff, Drew Naylor (4-0), got the win after striking out 11 and allowing only one run on seven hits through his seven innings of work. Austin McClune paced the Spikes offense going 2-for-4 with a run scored, but the Spikes left eight runners on base which proved too much to overcome.

SPIKES LOOK TO MAKE IT TEN IN A ROW – 7:05

5 07 2007

TONIGHT’S STARTER: RHP Moises Robles will be making his fourth start of the season when he toes the rubber for the Spikes this evening. It will be his second start of the season against Williamsport after suffering the loss on Opening Day against the ‘Cutters. Robles joined the Pirates this winter after being selected in the Minor League Baseball Rule 5 Draft from the New York Mets. The draft takes place each winter at the annual winter meetings and is meant to keep teams from stockpiling too many young players at a lower level from their talent. Robles had played in the DSL last season, so in order to select him the Pirates needed to move him up from that level and pay the Mets $4,000. During Robles three year career, he has posted a 6-6 record with a 2.68 ERA. The numbers are deceptive however because in two of his three season Robles’ ERA has been under 1.00.

‘It’s tough to win nine in a row’

5 07 2007

By Guy Cipriano – gciprian@centredaily.com

UNIVERSITY PARK — Nobody associated with the State College Spikes has been involved in more baseball games than manager Turner Ward.

Outfielder Austin McClune finds himself in an opposite situation. The 19-year-old has probably been involved in fewer games than any of his teammates.

But the duo has something in common. Neither the coach nor the outfielder remembers being involved in a nine-game winning streak. The Spikes won their ninth straight game Wednesday by defeating Williamsport 7-6 in 10 innings.

Beanball pushes Spikes to ninth straight win

5 07 2007

By Guy Cipriano – gciprian@centredaily.com

UNIVERSITY PARK — State College Spikes reliever Adam Simon stood in the dugout Wednesday afternoon and witnessed the same thing as the 5,035 fans that entered Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

On a wet field, Williamsport closer Matt German tossed nine straight balls, including one that ended the game. With two outs in the 10th, German’s wayward curveball grazed the forearm of State College Spikes shortstop Michael Ambrose.
