SPIKES STARTER: LHP Tony Watson will make his fifth start of the season when he takes the mound for the Spikes this evening. He enters the game fifth in the NYPL with a 1.19 ERA. The left-hander was a pre-season All-American heading into his junior season at Nebraska. Tony compiled a 6-4 record with a 4.02 ERA and led his team with 81 strikeouts. During the ‘07 campaign he was named the Big 12 Player of the Week three-times, and was named to the second-team all Big 12 following the year. He had his best start of the year against the #4 ranked Texas Longhorns, tossing a complete game, shutout, striking out six and allowing two hits. In 2006, he earned All American and All Big 12 status going 10-2 with a 2.78 ERA. During the summer of 2006, he made his presence felt in the prestigious Cape Cod League by posting a 5-2 record with a 2.44 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 48 innings. He has previously been drafted twice, once by the Florida Marlins in the 23rd round of the 2003 draft and the other by the Orioles in the 17th round of the 2006 draft.
What a difference a week made for Oneonta Tigers starting pitcher Sean Finefrock.
After getting hit hard at Damaschke Field in his O-Tigers debut _ a loss to the Lowell Spinners on July 5 _ Finefrock limited State College to one run on five hits over six innings Thursday. His outing helped visiting Oneonta to a 4-3 New York-Penn League victory.
Finefrock (1-1) allowed four runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings last Thursday in an 8-3 loss to Lowell. This time, he struck out three and walked two to earn his first victory for the O-Tigers (12-11), who have won three straight.

UNIVERSITY PARK — There it stood for the taking, a game against one of those exotic opponents the State College Spikes play only three times each season.
A ball slipped by the pitcher. That same pitcher pegged a pinch hitter with a wayward fastball.
All of this happened with one out in the ninth, so the pressure flipped to Oneonta pitcher Rudy Darrow, a diminutive, submarine-tossing right-hander.
Darrow started Spikes second baseman Matt Cavagnaro with a ball. He recovered by throwing a strike.
Cavagnaro then bounced into a game-ending doubleplay.
The ending of Thursday’s 4-3 loss to Oneonta at Medlar Field at Lubrano epitomized the Spikes’ recent woes.

It seemed like the Oneonta Tigers wanted to lose the game.
Costly errors, unfulfilled opportunities and a shaky ninth inning on both sides of the ball probably should have doomed them.
