Spikes lose fourth in a row

17 07 2007

going down 5-1 to Hudson Valley.

They certainly got the fans hopes up with their nine game winning streak but they’ve really struggled since.   While I certainly didn’t think their winning ways would continue,  I assuredly didn’t expect them to drop off they way that they have either sitting at 2-9 over their last 11.

I’m guessing the old Joe Paterno adage is at play here.  You are never as good as you look when you are winning, nor as bad as you look when you are losing.

Bucs come to terms with first-round pick

17 07 2007

PITTSBURGH — With camera flashes popping, his parents smiling and the news cameras catching each of his ear-to-ear grins on tape, Pirates first-round pick Daniel Moskos took a No. 7 jersey from general manager Dave Littlefield and slipped it over his head. Then came the black and gold cap.

And with that, the city of Pittsburgh was introduced to the newest member of the Pirates organization.

After his formal introduction at PNC Park, Moskos was scheduled to catch a flight to Bradenton, Fla., where the 21-year-old left-hander will begin a throwing and conditioning program. Moskos may pitch in a Gulf Coast League game while he is in Bradenton, but will be headed to join the Rookie League State College Spikes as soon as senior director of player development Brian Graham and the Bradenton staff sees that Moskos is ready to join the organization’s Minor League system.

Moskos signs

17 07 2007

Pirates are sending him to Brandenton to workout for a few days before they assign him to a team. He’s predicted to be a reliever so it’s quite likely he’ll pitch in a game or two there, then be reassigned to State College. I’d be very much surprised if he’s with the Spikes at the end of the season though. He’s very likely to get moved up quickly.
