NEW TRAFFIC PATTERNS AROUND MF @ LP

19 07 2007

Fans coming to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park should be advised that starting July 27, the East bound lane of Park Avenue will be closed to through traffic between Shortlidge Road and Bigler Road to allow for excavation and installation of a utility tunnel for the Dickinson School of Law.  Flagmen and temporary signals will be available to assist with traffic.

The suggested detour to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park from Park Avenue is to:

- Turn Right on to Shortlidge
- Turn Left at stop sign on to Curtain Road and follow Curtain Road to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Construction is scheduled to last until August 14.

Spikes make ESPN…

19 07 2007

or perhaps a little more accurately, the Spikes Ronald McDonald themed jersey (see photo) gets a mention in the readers feedback section in an ESPN the Magazine Page 2 article by Paul Lukas:

Behind the scenes at the epicenter of lettering

Other reader-submitted minor league promotions of note: the Madison Mallards’ Hockey Night; the Harrisburg Senators’ Parrothead Night; the many teams, including the Buffalo Bisons, who’ve held a Hawaiian Shirt Night; the Bowie Baysox’s Beach Night (are you noticing a pattern here?); the Kansas City T-Bones’ Redneck Night (additional views here and here); and the State College Spikes’ Ronald McDonald-themed jerseys (to benefit Ronald McDonald House).

Spikes play long ball, knock off Hudson Valley 5-4

19 07 2007

Led by Brian Friday’s solo home run, his first hit as a professional, the Spikes captured the rubber game of the three game series against the Hudson Valley renegades 5-4. Friday’s round tripper was one of three solo shots by Spikes players as State College got off to an early 4-0 lead then held on for the win.

Michael Ambrose promoted to Hickory

19 07 2007

That will clear the way for third round draft pick Brian Friday to become the every day shortstop for the Spikes.

7/19 – Spikes Game Notes

19 07 2007

STATE COLLEGE SPIKES (14-14) @ HUDSON VALLEY RENEGADES (13-15)

Game # 28 Road Game # 14

Dutchess Stadium, Wappings Falls, NY

Thursday, July 19, 2007
7:05 p.m.

RHP Matt Foust (0-2, 3.38) vs. RHP Joshua Johnson (1-1, 3.71)

THE STARTERS:

MATT FOUST will make his sixth start of the year for the Spikes. Foust was the
Pirates’ sixth round draft pick this past June, and has pitched solid though he
has yet to record a win. In his last start against the Brooklyn Cyclones, Foust
received a no decision after pitching 5.0 innings and giving up just one run without
giving up a single hit. In his last three starts, Foust has gone 5.0 innings or
more. His longest outing of the season came on July 2 versus Batavia when he went
6.0 scoreless innings against the Muckdogs. Foust tied a Spikes franchise record
with nine strikeouts against the Vermont Lake Monsters on July 8.

Pirates have top CEO candidate in Western Pa.

19 07 2007

In assessing the worthiness of their CEO candidates, the Pirates need
not insist upon their man having ties to Western Pennsylvania.

Not unless they remember that the current CEO is from California.

Mercifully, Kevin McClatchy’s reign of error is at long last
nearing its bitter end. But merely scraping his name off the office
door will solve nothing if the next occupant is as ill-prepared and
ill-suited to occupy the office.

The list might begin and end with Chuck Greenberg.

Spikes climb out of slump

19 07 2007

For
a team that was on its longest losing streak of the season, the possibility of going up against a knuckle-ball pitcher was added more pressure to an already dire situation.

Despite never facing a knuckle baller in their history, much less this season, the State College Spikes found a blessing in disguise in Hudson Valley Renegades pitcher Diego Echevierra.

In front of a crowd of opposing fans at the Dutchess Stadium in Wappingers Falls, NY, State College ended their losing streak at four games, defeating the Renegades 5-4.
