Second-round pick Welker fires Spikes past Yankees

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — One of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ top pitching prospects outdueled one of the New York Yankees’ top pitching prospects Saturday.

Duke Welker pitched six strong innings to record his first professional win of the season, leading the State College to a 7-1 win over starter Zach McAllister and Staten Island at Richmond County Ballpark.

The Spikes (16-15) have won three of four and are now 3-2 on their six-game road trip, which concludes at 2 p.m. today against the Yankees (17-14).
