The Pirates’ 2007 second round draft choice Duke Welker (1-1) notched his first win of his professional career as the Spikes thumped the Staten Island Yankees at The Ballpark at St. George Saturday night 7-1.
Welker went 6.0 innings, giving up just three hits en route to striking out four and giving up one run over the course of the night. Welker did not allow a base runner from the end of the first inning until one out in the bottom of the fifth as he retired 11 consecutive batters over that span.
State College used a five-run, seven-hit attack in the top of the eighth inning to extend on a 2-1 lead which they head the entire evening.
