STATE COLLEGE STARTER: LHP TONY WATSON will make his seventh start of the season when he takes the mound for the Spikes this evening. The left-hander was a pre-season All-American heading into his junior season at Nebraska. Tony compiled a 6-4 record with a 4.02 ERA and led his team with 81 strikeouts. During the ‘07 campaign he was named the Big 12 Player of the Week three-times, and was named to the second-team all Big 12 following the year. He had his best start of the year against the #4 ranked Texas Longhorns, tossing a complete game, shutout, striking out six and allowing two hits. In 2006, he earned All American and All Big 12 status going 10-2 with a 2.78 ERA. During the summer of 2006, he made his presence felt in the prestigious Cape Cod League by
posting a 5-2 record with a 2.44 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 48 innings. He has previously been drafted twice, once by the Florida Marlins in the 23rd round of the 2003 draft and the other by the Orioles in the 17th round of the 2006 draft.

Every dog has its day

Dogs and deer are usually not the best of friends, but this evening, the State College Spikes are hosting a special pooch promotion: the second annual Bark in the Park night. All dogs, accompanied by a paying human, will be admitted free to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

The gates open at 6 p.m. for the 7:05 p.m. game with Cal Ripken Jr.’s Aberdeen IronBirds. Between-inning entertainment will include the Sky Dogs USA and Rockin’ Ray. The first 2,000 fans of any species to arrive will receive a Frisbee.

Spikes return to State College for six-game stand

Just as it was the last time the State College Spikes were in town, fans will be welcoming a new member to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Last week, starting pitcher Duke Welker began his career as a Spike by pitching in the first and last game of the six-game home stand. Now as he becomes a regular, it is an infielder that will have his first chance to play in front of the home crowd.
