Matt Cavagnaro hit a two run double that brought the Spikes from one down to one up giving them a lead over the Doubledays that they never relinquished. Matt scored on a base hit later in the inning to put State College up by two. That run proved to be the game winner as State College prevailed 3-2.
Austin McClune starred both at the plate and in the field. He eked out three singles but truly starred from right field. In the fifth inning he gunned down a runner at the plate to hold Auburn to only one run in the inning. In the seventh, he nabbed another runner trying to stretch a single into a double. Then in the eighth, his perfect relay throw to Matt Cavagnaro helped nab another runner at the plate. Cavy spotted the baserunner making too wide a turn at third and smartly threw behind him causing a rundown.
STATE COLLEGE STARTER: RHP JACOB CUFFMAN will make his first start of the year for the State College Spikes. Cuffman is on a rehabilitation assignment with the Spikes, after struggling with his control at Hickory. With the Crawdads in nine appearances, Cuffman only pitched 7.1 innings, walking 14 batters and striking out only seven. Cuffman also surrendered 21 runs (20 earned) on 13 hits. Cuffman was working with Altoona Curve pitching coach Ray Searage to rectify his control issues after he last pitched at Hickory on June 7. Cuffman pitched the 2003 & 2004 season in Bradenton with the Gulf Coast League Pirates, before spending the entire 2005 season with the Williamsport Crosscutters. Jacob started last year with Hickory but faltered going 0-3 with a 6.15 ERA before being sent back to Williamsport. The righty is 8-17 lifetime in 94 games (14 starts) with 14 career saves. Cuffman, a native of Butler, PA (just 20 miles north of Pittsburgh) was drafted out of Butler Area High School in the 14th round of the 2003 draft.

UNIVERSITY PARK — State College Spikes reliever Adam Simon decided after three years at UCLA he wanted to end his college career at another school.
The decision produced phone calls and campus visits.
The decision also led Simon to a coach whose intentions and approach seemed genuine.
“He was real honest and realistic,” Simon said. “He told me I would have an opportunity to play. He didn’t beat around the bush.”
Simon couldn’t resist joining the coach’s program.
Today, that coach will provide a respite from some of the issues hampering professional sports.
Former San Diego Padres outfielder Tony Gwynn will be inducted into the Hall of Fame along with former Baltimore Orioles shortstop Cal Ripken Jr. The duo is expected to attract a massive crowd to Cooperstown, N.Y.
