Spikes’ bats fail them again and they are shutout 4-0 by Mahoning Valley. Tony Watson (6-1) gave up a two run home run in the fourth inning and that was all that the Scrappers needed. The win enabled Mahoning Valley to move into a tie with the State College for second place in the NYPL Pinckney Division behind division leading Auburn.
Auburn failed to extend its Pinckney Division lead over second-place State College.
The Doubledays dropped the series finale, 3-2 on Sunday despite impressive pitching performances from Luis Perez and Nate Melek.

After months of baseball, the crucial day is almost here. Only one more day until July 31, 2007, the trade deadline for major league baseball teams.
Tomorrow, the life of a major league baseball player could change
dramatically. Players could move across the country, cross the boundary
between the National League and American League, and maybe even change
positions.

It’s been a week and the State College Spikes, yet again, have not gained nor lost any ground in the standings and are again a .500 team.
After playing three games against a non-conference team, the Spikes had a chance to move up in their division when the Auburn Doubledays came to town. With the rubber match of the series on the line and the chance to be 2.5 games out of first, State College gutted out a 3-2 win.

Austin McClune’s game saving three outfield assists only reinforced the reputation that Austin has for having a rifle of an arm. BaseballAmerica.com already anointed the young outfielder with the “best outfield arm” in the Pirates organization.

UNIVERSITY PARK — It got feisty, especially around the area that will ultimately define the second half of the State College Spikes’ season.
Victor Santana, one of the many hulking players on the first-place Auburn Doubledays, slipped around third base and charged home.
Nick Stillwagon, the catcher of the second-place State College Spikes, stood his ground as Santana approached the plate.
A collision was inevitable.
