Mahoning Valley took over second place in the Pinckney Division of the NYPL by defeating the State College Spikes 6-3 this evening. Spikes starter Matt Foust couldn’t get out of the second inning as he wound up giving up five runs, two earned, in just 1 2/3 innings worked. Foust had control problems, walking three and hitting two batters.
The Spike’s bullpen came in and held the Scrappers to one run over the rest of the game but the damage was done. The defeat dropped State College to 18-20 overall and into third place in the division.

RHP Matt Foust (1-2, 2.97) vs. LHP Bill Delage (0-4, 6.29)
STATE COLLEGE STARTER: RHP Matt Foust will take the mound for his eighth start of the year this evening against the Scrappers. Foust enters tonight’s action with a 1-2 record with a 2.97 ERA. In his 14.0 innings of work, he has allowed only three earned runs but has struggled with his control as he has walked 11 runners and struck out only nine. In his last start, Foust allowed two runs on two hits while walking five over his 3.0 innings of work against Aberdeen on July 25th. On the season, opponents are hitting only .183 against Foust, but his 21 base on balls rank him fourth in the NYPL only four behind Sendy Vasquez of Oneonta. Foust was the Pirates’ 6th round selection in the 2006 MLB draft out of the University of Nebraska. At Nebraska, Foust split time between the starting rotation and the bullpen. In 2007, he went 2-4 with seven saves. In 65.0 innings, he walked 32 and struck out 53.

Despite being on the road, a little hometown love came alive when the State College Spikes battled the Mahoning Valley Scrappers last night
First baseman Justin Byler grew up in Warren, Ohio, which is just five minutes from the Scrappers stadium, Eastwood Field.
With his family and friends in the park, he proceeded to have one of his luckiest games this season.
Despite going 2-for-2 and getting on base in all four at bats, Byler’s hometown luck was not enough for a win, as the Spikes suffered a 4-0 loss to Mahoning Valley Scrappers.

Justin Byler was solid in his homecoming going 2-for-2, and reaching base four times, but the Warren G. Harding grad couldn’t power the Spikes past the Scrappers.
