Spikes Win 6-2 Over Mahoning Valley

6 08 2007

On a day when Pirates first round selection Daniel Moskos made his Spikes debut, it was a pair of lesser known prospects who took center stage in the Spikes 6-2 win over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. The win snapped the Scrappers eight game winning streak. Matt Foust (2-3), the Pirates 6th round selection in 2007, made the start and tossed five shutout innings to get the win. Offensively, it was Marcus Davis, an 18th round selection from Alcorn State, who lead the charge. Davis went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBI and his sixth home run of the season.

Moskos makes his State College debut in Spikes win

6 08 2007

Daniel Moskos, the Pirates 2007 #1 draft pick made his long awaited debut in the sixth inning of today’s game against Mahoning Valley.   State College led 3-1 at the time thanks to a superb pitching effort by Matt Foust.  Moskos pitched a workmanlike 2 innings, giving up 3 hits and an earned run which closed the State College lead to just one run.  Frankly, he looked like just another pitcher out there in the deep State College bullpen not like the million dollar bonus baby that he is.  Hopefully we’ll see the latter down the road.

Fortunately, the Spikes scored a few more in the seventh and eighth and they coasted home with a 6-2 win over the Scrappers.  The win moved them to within one game of the second place Scrappers.

SPIKES LOOK TO SNAP SKID AGAINST SCRAPPERS

6 08 2007

The Spikes have lost their last six games against the Scrappers, dating back to September of 2006, and will look to snap the streak this afternoon at 12:00 p.m. Pirates top pick Daniel Moskos is expected to see his first action of the season.

SPIKES STARTER: RHP Matt Foust will make his ninth start of the year this afternoon. The Pirates’ sixth round draft selection this June, will make his fifth home start of the season. Foust has struggled his last two outings, going just 3.0 innings and walking a season-high five batters against Aberdeen on July 25, and lost against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers at Eastwood Field on July 31. In his last start against the Scrappers, Foust lasted just 1.2 innings giving up five runs on three hits and walking three. Foust is 1-3 on the season, with his lone win coming against the Hudson Valley Renegades on July 19. In 32.0 total innings this year, Foust has struck out 32 and walked 24. Opposing batters are just hitting just .197 against the former Nebraska Cornhusker. At Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, Matt has pitched much better, as his ERA is nearly two runs lower (2.25 in four starts at home vs. 4.50 in four starts on the road). Opponents are hitting just .145 against Foust at home as opposed to .242 on the road.Go to the rest of the story

Spikes’ pitching woes continue as Scrappers win eighth straight

6 08 2007

By Guy Cipriano – gciprian@centredaily.com

UNIVERSITY PARK — The mid-summer game of musical pitchers can have a major impact on the State College Spikes.

Take Sunday for example.

Two revival projects struggled. One durable arm flourished.

When the pitchers who have been somewhere else completed their outings, the Spikes suffered another lost to Mahoning Valley.

SPIKES FALL TO MAHONING VALLEY, 5-2

6 08 2007

The State College Spikes lost to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 5-2 on Sunday night. Brandon Williams was the lone bright spot on the night tossing 5.1 strong innings of relief.

UNIVERSITY PARK — The Spikes fell behind early and were never able to rebound as they fell to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers by the score 5-2 on Sunday evening. The loss dropped the Spikes record to 21-24 on the season and moved them 5.5 games behind the Auburn Doubledays in the race for the Pinckney Division lead.

Spikes starter Jake Cuffman (0-1)struggled with his control early, walking three and allowing four hits over his 2/3 of an inning of work as the Scrappers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after one. Brandon Williams came on in relief of Cuffman and tossed 5.1 innings of near-perfect baseball, allowing only one hit while striking out three to give the Spikes a chance to get back into the game.

First-inning deficit too much for Spikes

6 08 2007

By Kate Aras Email
Collegian Staff Writer

State College Spikes starter Jake Cuffman started the night with a 0.00 ERA. He left Medlar Field at Lubrano Park after only throwing 28 pitches, 10 for strikes, and sporting a 7.36 ERA.

By the end of the night, the team, especially Cuffman, would come to regret this bad start. Despite fighting back, it would be unable to overcome the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, losing the game, 5-2.
