Staying in command

12 08 2007

By Guy Cipriano – gciprian@centredaily.com

State College Spikes pitching coach Wilson Alvarez oversaw a bullpen session before a game against Lowell last week and spent a few minutes chatting with the Spinners’ coaches.

He first held a jovial conversation with first base coach Carlos Febles in Spanish. Lowell manager Gary DiSarcina then joined the discussion.

The trio spoke for three minutes –and in two languages — about the most recent accomplishment in Alvarez’s career.

Alvarez completed the naturalization process to become a United States citizen earlier this month. The process forced Alvarez, 37, to leave the Spikes for a week. He rejoined the team last Sunday after successfully completing a 10-minute test in Tampa.

SPIKES TACKLE TRI-CITY TONIGHT AT 7:05 PM

12 08 2007

SPIKES STARTER:  RHP MATT FOUST will make the start for the Spikes this evening.  The 6th round selection from the University of Nebraska enters tonight’s action with a 2-3 record and a 2.92 ERA.  Foust has struggled with inconsistency this season, allowing one earned run or less in every other start dating back to July 2nd.  In his last outing, Foust tossed five shutout innings, allowing only four hits while walking two and striking out three.  Foust has been a different pitcher at Medlar Field at LubranoPark versus on the road.  In five games at home, Foust is 1-1 with a 1.71 ERA.  He has allowed only four earned runs over 21.0 innings of work.  On the road, the right-hander is 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA in four starts.  Foust has also struggled with his control this season, as his 26 walks rank him sixth in the NYPL.  While at Nebraska, Foust split time as a starter and reliever.  During 2007, his senior year with the Cornhuskers he went 2-4 with a 4.02 ERA with seven saves over 27 appearances.
