SPIKES STARTER: RHP DUKE WELKER will make the start for the Spikes this evening to open up the home stretch of the season. Welker, the Pirates’ 2nd round selection in the 2007 MLB draft, enters tonight’s action with a 2-2 record and a 2.43 ERA in six starts. In his last start on August 8th, the right-hander went four innings, allowing three runs, two of which were earned on five hits, while walking two and striking out five. The outing was Welker’s least effective to this point in the season. The former Arkansas Razorback has been far better on the road than at home, as he is 2-0 with a 0.82 ERA in two starts on the road. He has allowed only one run on five hits over his 11.0 innings as the visitor. At Arkasas, Welker went 7-5 during his only season in the SEC and was the second of three Razorbacks selected in the top 100 of the MLB draft as teammates Nick Schmidt was the 23rd overall selection by the San Diego Padres, and Jess Todd was the 82nd overall selection by the St. Louis Cardinals.
