Cavagnaro leads Spikes to another big win

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — State College’s Mike Cavagnaro was 4-for-6 with a double, home run and three RBIs as the Spikes dumped the Jamestown Jammers 10-5 Thursday night at Russel Diethrick Park.

The win gives State College 26 runs and 49 hits in its last three games, all wins.

Cavagnaro sparks Spikes

Matt Cavagnaro went 4-for-6 with a homer and three RBIs as visiting State College beat Jamestown, 10-5, on Thursday.

Cavagnaro singled and scored in the first inning, ripped an RBI single in the second and stroked a run-scoring double in the fourth before launching a solo homer, his first, in the ninth. Over his last five games, the 21-year-old third baseman is 11-for-26 with six RBIs.

Big Night for Cavy…

Matt goes 4-6 (misses the cycle by the ever elusive triple) and leads the Spikes to their third win in a row with a 10-5 victory over Jamestown. The win raises the Spikes’ record to .500 (5-5). This was their third game in a row where they pounded out at least 14 hits. The team which was floundering near the bottom of the league in hitting are now the league leaders.

Pirates farm report

STATE COLLEGE (Class-A Short Season, 4-5) won, 10-6, at Batavia (Cardinals). First baseman Justin Byler and designated hitter Marcus Davis each drove in two runs. Byler, Davis, and shortstop Smelin Perez each had three hits. Right-hander Christian Castorri (1-0) gave up one hit and no runs in 1 2/3 innings to get the win.

SPIKES LOOK TO MAKE IT THREE IN A ROW – 7:05

TONIGHT’S STARTER: RHP Dionis Rodriguez will make his second start for the Spikes this evening, after spending some time earlier this season with the Hickory Crawdads (SAL – A) and the Lynchburg Hillcats (CAR – A). In five games with Hickory, Rodriguez went 0-2 and had a 10.80 ERA. In his first start with the Spikes, which was also against Jamestown, Rodriguez got the win after allowing only one run through seven innings of work. Prior to this season, Dionis had a career record of 11-16, but had struck out 246 batters in 196.2 career innings of work. Conversely, he had walked only 46 batters.

SOCCER BALL GIVEAWAY – JULY 2nd

On Monday, July 2nd the State College Spikes will take on the Batavia Muckdogs at 7:05 PM. The first 1,000 kids 14 & under will receive a soccer ball compliments of Nittany Bank.

In addition, former Penn State All-American Ali Krieger will be on hand to sign autographs and throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Krieger will be heading to Finland to play with the U.S National Team followinger her appearance at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
