Spikes Make it Eight in a Row

3 07 2007

What a difference a night makes. On Monday evening, the Spikes were limited to only one run on three hits en route to their seventh straight victory. A day later, the Spikes bats made up for lost time, scoring nine runs on 14 hits to push their win streak to eight. It was a total team effort on Tuesday, as all nine starters collected at least one base hit and seven different Spikes drove in a run. Brian Tracy (2-0) got the win after tossing four strong innings of relief, allowing only one run on two hits.

3 07 2007

By Guy Cipriano – gciprian@centredaily.com

UNIVERSITY PARK — David Carpenter holds multiple places in State College Spikes’ lore.

He caught the first pitch in team history and it could be a while before anybody breaks more bats than Carpenter did during the 2006 season.

This week, Carpenter has added to his significance in franchise history.

Spikes Make It Seven Straight With 1-0 Win Over Batavia

3 07 2007

The State College Spikes and the Batavia Muckdogs locked up in a classic pitcher’s dual on Monday evening, with State College coming out on top 1-0. Spikes hurlers combined to allow only two hits on the night, and the Muckdogs never got a runner passed first base in the game. Offensively, the Spikes were not much better, collecting only three hits, but they took advantage of 10 free passes from the Muckdogs to get the victory. The win was the Spikes seventh in a row, matching the franchise high set last season from August 7th – 13th.

Spikes shut out Batavia to move into tie for first

3 07 2007

UNIVERSITY PARK — State College Spikes pitcher Matt Foust spent the past two weeks watching a college teammate record three straight solid outings as a professional.

After the third time Tony Watson controlled New York-Penn League hitters, Foust found his own way to prepare for a professional start.

He lowered his 6-foot-3, 223-pound frame across the clubhouse couch.

By Kate Aras Email
Collegian Staff Writer

Changes were made during the off-season that have entirely revamped the face of the State College Spikes.

With a shift of major league affiliation from the St. Louis Cardinals to the Pittsburgh Pirates, everything from uniform colors to the large emblem painted on the field was changed, not to mention an entirely new team and coaching staff.

Spikes gut out late run in nail-biter

3 07 2007

By Kate Aras Email
Collegian Staff Writer

If Sunday night was full of hits and good defensive plays, last night had its fair share of mistakes and walks.

After State College Spikes center fielder Miles Durham hit the first grand slam at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Sunday, all offensive power was zapped from both teams. It was left up to the pitchers to battle it out, seeing who could walk the least amount of batters and survive the night.
