Spikes fall in the tenth

27 07 2007

Despite playing a doubleheader on Wednesday night, it seemed the State College Spikes and the Aberdeen IronBirds hadn’t gotten their fill of baseball.

Last night’s game, however, had no correlation to either one of the doubleheaders. Rather than an average offensive night that the fans at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park had seen the night before, it was a pitcher’s duel between the two starting pitchers.

Watson making the Pirates look good

27 07 2007

By Guy Cipriano – gciprian@centredaily.com

The Orioles made Watson an above slot-money offer. The sides never agreed to terms and Watson returned to Nebraska for a fourth season.

Coaches now more aware of surroundings

27 07 2007

UNIVERSITY PARK — Part of State College hitting coach Mike Moriarty’s job requires him to stand beside first base and watch every move both teams make.

The job resembles the one Mike Coolbaugh held.

Moriarty thought about Coolbaugh as he trotted to first base during the Spikes’ series against Aberdeen at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Coolbaugh, who coached first base for the Double-A Tulsa Drillers, was killed Sunday after being struck by a foul ball.

Attention grabber

27 07 2007

By Guy Cipriano – gciprian@centredaily.com

UNIVERSITY PARK — The ball Aberdeen second baseman Ryan Adams hit off State College Spikes closer Ronald Uviedo forcefully traveled toward the left-field fence.

Most of the people who witnessed Adams pound Uviedo’s fastball simply looked down and conceded a home run.

Spikes left fielder Marcus Davis had other ideas.
